One Thing Leads to Another.

It's been the craziest weekend, and it's only Saturday night. My mom has been having some problems with her heart since we got back from New York (and perhaps had a little sort of heart attack while we were there, but that's hard to determine because we didn't go to the ER while there), so I took her to the emergency room yesterday morning and spent most of the day with her. She spent the night in their observation unit and underwent more tests and procedures today. I brought her home this evening and she's doing sort of okay, but the mystery of what's wrong with her heart hasn't been solved yet. It could be any number of things, and the family history is quite grim.

That was a rollercoaster ride in itself, but then today, while out on a little family drive, we stopped by a local Honda dealership to take a minivan for a test drive and ended up bringing one home with us. We really didn't start the day saying that we were going to buy a new (used) car, but here we are, the proud owners of a very cute little van that actually seats the whole family with room to spare. We had planned on buying a van sometime this summer, but I didn't think that it would happen until the end of the month at the earliest. However, we found the right van at the right price (and I made the dealership detail our Civic as part of the deal). We haven't named it yet, but as we get to know the vehicle better, it will reveal its name to us (as did F. Gordon and Carmen before it). And what's more, it comes equipped with a DVD player. I don't know how I survived without one in the car before. My children are incredibly cute but also incredibly shrieky, and this thing shuts them right up. It must increase parental driver safety by 75% simply because one doesn't have to turn around every five minutes to settle a fight or tell certain people to shut their piehole (in the nicest, most supportive and self-esteem-enhancing way, of course).

Congratulations on the new van and the DVD! I vowed never to stoop to putting a DVD player in the car. But the third child is not a rider. We gave up any long-distance car trips for years (by long-distance I mean anything over 20 minutes). Until December, when I bought a portable DVD.

HEAVEN.

She still won't sit and watch an entire movie at home or the theater, but when she's trapped, it keeps her happy for hours. Yay for technology.

Keep us posted on your mom.

Hi K-

I just read this, and I didn't realize! I hope your mom is doing better, and that they at least have a better sense of what's going on. I know from experience that heart troubles are no fun. I'll be thinking of you all!
