Flying Dutchfolk.

I went to the opera last night with my mom.
The Flying Dutchman.
It was divine, from the incredible set (ghostly ships and seven spinning wheels) to the beautiful cast. The Dutchman himself was even rather sexy, in a bug-eyed young baritone sort of way. And the music? Oh the music. The libretto was inspired (even if it was in German; as my mom says, nobody does Wagner like Wagner).

(Say what you will about this state, but what other city has mountains and lakes for hiking, swimming, and snowboarding (and skiing, for the purists), great theater and music, a forever budding art scene, university stuff, professional sports teams, deserts within a few hours drive, and the most maddening/entertaining political circus anywhere? I'm trying to remind myself why I still live here.)

Ah yes, our daily love/hate relationship with Utah. ;) The Flying Dutchman was the first opera I listened to with my Dad. We followed the libretto while we listened. It's a favorite memory. We also loved Le Boheme. ;-)

Just consider the local culture and political circus to be the "mosquito repellent" that keeps most people from invading the city. Otherwise, EVERYONE would be moving here.

Perhaps I should give the opera another try--Don Giovanni about did me in, but there were no spinning wheels, as I recall. . .

Yes, Utah. . .I'd really love it if I didn't hate it so much. . .I mean. . .whatever. . .

If we all were perfectly content, what would we write about? Personally, the blue skies and vistas pretty much do it for me.
